| TONI ALEXANDER
| | Toni Alexander (a.k.a. Joy Vander Lek) passed up on her chance to become a brilliant physicist and part-time lounge singer, to be the lead voice and program manager for Ski Watch. Joy's skied Germany's Alps and Scotland, and may yet return... if her husband can get her to go on a plane again. Aside from skiing, Joy also has a penchant for reading cereal boxes and studying metaphysics, molecular science and quantum theory physics. She is into crafts, gardening and sports of most types. Mainly though, her true Joyism is her ability to have a childlike curiosity and awe of everything in the world about her. | | GERRY CANTLON
| | Gerard Cantlon has been a producer with Ski Watch for the past 15 years. "Gerry", as he is commonly known (most of his other nicknames not being suitable for a family website), coordinates the daily insanity with 100-plus station affiliates for the Ski Watch voice talent, writing crew and sales staff. He also answers to the name "MP3". In addition to caring for his cavalcade of cats (five that we know of), in his spare time he is a freelance writer covering AHL minor pro hockey for various Connecticut newspapers over the years, including the New Haven Register, the Waterbury Republican-American, the Danbury News-Times and many independent publications. Currently, he writes for EuropeanHockey.net. He has worked with Elm City Citizen newspapers for five years and has served as sports editor for the West Haven Voice newspaper and for WXCT, WWCO and WAVZ radio stations. | | JENNIFER COAN-MAHMOOD
| | Born to ski, forced to work, Jennifer writes for Ski Watch’s Southeast and Southern New England markets. A native of the beautiful Berkshires in western Massachusetts, she started skiing at Bousquet when she was just four years old. Bustin’ gates by the time she was six, she went on to race NCAA Division I for Saint Michael’s College in Vermont. The notion that starting a career was important brought her to Connecticut, where she soon married and bought a house making her unfortunate move from the mountains pretty permanent. (That and her husband’s utter loathing of cold weather, mean a move back north is unlikely any time soon). This new mom also coaches the USSA affiliated race program at Mt. Southington. On the weekends you’ll find her teaching impressionable children to race at high speeds down the steepest stuff she can find. Thank heavens they’re required to wear a helmet. A huge fan of skiing anywhere, Jennifer particularly enjoys the occasional trip out west to Colorado or Utah. Some items on her future excursions menu include the champagne at Jackson Hole, a taste of Telluride, succulent Sun Valley, and the culturally diverse cuisine of Whistler/Blackcomb. Bon appetit!
| | JIM DEREK
| |
Jim is in his seventh year as a voice talent for Ski Watch. Over the years, Jim has hosted his own radio morning show in his hometown of Lincoln, NE, worked as a copywriter at a New York City ad agency and written a nationally syndicated radio program. He also manages his own web site in his hours away from Ski Watch. Jim's most memorable skiing experience was at Winter Park, CO, where he enjoyed the huge flakes coming down while he skied in only a sweater. Okay, he had pants and boots on too. Jim is often mistaken for a huge flake but we still love him anyway.
| | JAY JURGEN
| |
When his work as an East Berlin border guard, and professional chainsaw juggler didn’t work out, Ski Watch producer Jay Jurgen found himself in the radio business. A smooth transition, we think. He began his broadcasting career as a cart winder (remember carts?) at one radio station, before he moved up to be the van driver in the Promotions department. Finally, after many miles, Jay parked it in the producer chair for the morning show team. Unfortunately, Jay and the morning show were eventually replaced by automation. He then dove into his other love, skiing, and became an instructor at a local ski area. Jay now works for Ski Watch by day; and by night, he and his lovely wife Jennifer live in cabin in the woods, somewhere in the USA.
